Different Cultures and Power Affect Collaboration

Culture and power can affect collaboration among its participants.  Different cultures have different viewpoints on collaborating.  That is some cultures defer to the experts and find it disrespectful to speak up or speak to differing point to others on a team, some cultures (such as the US) find that advocating for oneself for individual success is highly desirable, some cultures have certain roles by gender, birth order, etc. to fulfill, some cultures find that family over the individual is more important, therefore, it will be important to understand the cultures of team participants and how they may have an effect on team contribution.


As mentioned earlier as a possible barrier, power may also have an effect on successful collaboration, so it is important to understand and be sensitive to how power may play a hand.
